Jose Goncalves learned the art of furniture making as a boy in Portugal. He worked in a furniture store in Washington D.C. for several years prior to opening his own store in North Arlington. Since 1983, Jose and his staff have offered the finest custom furniture available. Today, his clientele stretches from coast to coast. Jose Goncalves and Sons can create furnishings from a photograph or design to your specifications. Their expertise will astonish you. Over half of the staff has been with Jose for 10 years or more. Their hand-crafted products are built from scratch, using the finest fabrics from across the world. The hardwoods are top quality American Maple, Poplar and Mahogany. Jose uses English bump and Spanish tapes. The brass fitting and tassels are Portuguese. All upholstering is done the traditional way, using genuine muslin first, then finished with the fabric of your choice. The springs are hand-tied. Jose’s work is found in museums downtown as well as households across the country. He and his staff are proud of their products, but they don’t like to brag. One curiosity that his staff brought to light is about a dog house of all things! As it turns out, Jose built a velvet upholstered doghouse complete with a needlepoint decor for President Reagan in the late 1980’s.
